3rd September is Merchant Navy Day and this is marked by flying the Red Ensign.
The Red Ensign has been the recognised flag of the British Merchant Navy since 1854. It has become linked with the world wide trade links that made the UK’s fortune in the intervening years and, while there are fewer ships many thousands of British seafarers still work on the oceans of the world. In fact, 95% of our trade comes by sea.
To mark this occasion our school was invited to raise the Red Ensign in the village. Tilly Duckworth and Ruby-Rose Prendergast had the honour of helping to raise this great flag.
